His undergraduate degree is from the University of North Carolina where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and his medical degree is from the Medical College of Georgia. His cardiovascular training was at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC., where he was an instructor from 1984-1985 and an Assistant Professor from 1985-1987.
